When a player attempts to make a tackle but does not successfully contact and bring down the attacker.

How it’s identified

  • The defender clearly attempts to tackle (reaches, wraps, or shoots in).
  • The defender fails to stop or bring down the ball carrier when it would be reasonable to expect the tackle to be made.

Notes

  • A defender who could not complete the tackle because of an obstruction is not counted as a missed tackle.
  • A hold-up (carrier stopped upright, never brought to ground) is not a missed tackle and not a tackle either.
