When the team begins a maul with possession of the ball. A maul forms when a ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and at least one of the ball carrier’s teammates binds on. All participants must remain upright.

How it’s identified

  • Minimum three players: the ball carrier, one teammate bound on, and one opponent.
  • All players are on their feet.
  • Mauls most commonly follow lineouts but can also form during open play.
  • A collapsed maul is still coded as a maul; any penalty is recorded separately.
