When a player throws the ball to another player (not including passes down to the scrum-half in lineouts). A pass is the deliberate transfer of the ball from one player to another on the same team, using the hands, without the ball travelling forward.

Notes

  • A backward tap to a teammate counts as a pass.
  • A quick throw-in where no lineout is formed counts as a pass.
  • A pass differs from an offload: an offload happens while the passer is being tackled or going to ground; a pass is a clean transfer without contact.
