The number of consecutive rucks (phases of play) a team builds before possession ends through a kick, turnover, set piece, try, or other interrupting event. Reported as an average per game. More phases generally means the team is retaining possession and building sustained pressure. Two related readings answer different questions about the same possessions: Most phases built is the longest single sequence, and Phase sequences at a threshold is how many times the team reached 3+ phases, 5+ phases, and so on.
