When a player kicks the ball (not including restarts, penalty kicks, or free kicks). Covers punts, grubbers, and drop kicks during open play. Only open-play kicks are counted.

Notes

  • A kick from inside the kicker’s own 22m that goes directly into touch (no bounce) is coded; the lineout is at the touchline.
  • A kick from outside the 22m that goes directly into touch is not coded — the lineout returns to the kick location.
  • A bouncing kick into touch is coded only when the lineout is at the landing spot, not the kick location.
  • A charged-down kick is coded with 1 metre of distance.
  • A kick caught with a mark call is still coded.
