When a player knocks the ball on or makes a forward pass. A knock-on happens when a player loses possession and the ball travels forward from their hands or arms (or hits a hand or arm and goes forward), and another player or the ground touches the ball before the original player recovers it. A forward pass happens when a player passes the ball forward towards the opposition’s dead-ball line; the ball travels forward out of the hands at the moment of release.

Notes

  • A deliberate knock-on is coded as an infringement, not as an error.
  • An error is coded even when the referee plays advantage.
  • A charged-down clearance kick is not an error.
